Weekday Devotionals - Raquel
Sabbath. Oh, how pleased I was to hear Pastor Pete preach on the Sabbath the week I am set to write the devotional. One of my favorite parts of being a Christian! The command to take a Sabbath REST.
So, what is it? And how do we do it? Simply put, Sabbath is a period of time to appreciate the life Jesus has given us. We choose to stop the hustle and bustle for a period of time (e.g 24 hours) and create space for Jesus to refresh our weary and tired souls.
Rather than follow a formal outline, I believe the heart of it is to set a time to connect with God and focus on our blessings in ways that are unique to each of us. For me, the Sabbath looks like sleeping in and waking up slowly. I put on some music while I dance in the kitchen and make a tasty breakfast (hopefully biscuits & gravy). I sit on my porch with my breakfast and coffee while I listen to the birds sing and watch the trees dance in the breeze. I soak in The Word and meditate on all the goodness God has brought to my life. The rest of the day is filled with family and laughter. Some days it’s a day out in nature. Other times, it’s spent with my nose in a book in my hammock. The activities vary, but the purpose remains the same. Quieting the noise and connecting with Him. Take a moment and think of what Sabbath could look like for you.
Mark 2:27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”
God isn’t impressed by our constant busyness. He is glorified when we intentionally set aside time to rest and refocus on Him. We slow down and count our blessings. Because with a refreshed spirit, we are better equipped to go out into the world and be a shining light and show love to others.
If this is a new concept for you, I encourage you to simply choose a day this week to dedicate to a Sabbath rest. All those things on your “to do” list can wait one more day. And, don’t over think it. Just show up and God will meet you there. :)
